Cancer Horoscope for August 2010
By Susan Miller
Tonight I had a post-birthday dinner with a dear Cancer friend I will call Jennifer. Jen talked excitedly about her amazing new position at the helm of an important new magazine as well as the stunning and extensive long-awaited renovation that she has been undergoing in her Manhattan apartment. "It's finally going to be truly my own!" she squealed. I thought to myself, yes, and you are making your job truly your own, too - it will be a perfect expression of the true "you" inside.
Getting your dream job, dear reader, is precisely what Jupiter in Aries is bringing you these days. Finally you will have an opportunity to find your true vocation. If you joined a company lately, or will soon, you are likely to find it fits you like a beautifully custom tailored suit, and because it will use your talents well, you'll more likely succeed.
Often when Jupiter is on one side of a chart (in this case, the tenth house of fame and honors) it pings energy to the opposite house, in this case, the house of home and family. Saturn rules structure, so I asked Jen if she was ripping out walls. "Absolutely!" she said gleefully. No project will go more to the heart and delight a Cancer than one that centers on the home. The project has been taking a long time though, and Jen said it was hard to live there while all the changes were going on. (Sure, I thought to myself, with Saturn in that area of the chart, things would go very slowly but may be worth it, for the contractors would probably work carefully.)
In Jen's case, she was apparently not feeling the pressure of Saturn in her home sector, say, in terms of struggling to pay a mortgage or in taking care of an aging parent, but indeed many Cancers are feeling those pressures these days.
Saturn moved into your home sector on July 21, to stay until October 2012. Saturn is a self-regulating planet, however, and by that I mean that some people need a lot of Saturn's tutoring, and some people only need a little. Saturn will give you just the perfect amount of challenge and information you need to become more responsible and mature, no more, no less.
A young Cancer might lease a first apartment, while others who are more mature may buy a first house. In my friend's case, she loved the apartment she was living in and owned. She was now ready to launch into her first major refurbishing project.
I joked with my friend, "Jen, you just don't have enough going on in your life, do you?" She laughed, but I know by looking at Cancer's chart that not all the changes were necessarily easy. Cancer is undergoing vast upheaval these days, due in part to the eclipses, and due in part to so many planets touring cardinal signs. Somehow Jen was able to keep all these dishes spinning on sticks, without seeing one teeter. Cardinal signs are people who get things done and my friend Jen was a perfect example of that.
With Mars in Libra in August, you too, dear Cancer, may be highly focused on home and family over the coming weeks, at least until September 14. With Venus there as well, the changes you make would be quite beautiful. If you want to buy things, do, and keep in mind Venus will leave your home sector on September 8. There will be a complication though, in that Mercury will retrograde from August 20 to September 12, something I will discuss later in this report. This means you will have to get cracking if you want to buy something new - get it soon and early in the month. It's never wise to buy expensive things when Mercury is out of phase because you just won't get the pleasure later that you assume you will.
I have one other thought about Venus' tour of your home sector this month. Venus may see to it that you spend more time with your children or parents. If so, that would be a blessing. You would be so glad you took that time to be together.
Jen and I also touched on her recent major breakup with a man she had been dating a while, and I said I was sorry to hear the relationship ended. Jen explained with a serious, thoughtful expression that she was ready to let go of that relationship. In the end she felt he was not for her. I quietly thought to myself, the eclipses of December 31 and June 26 were exerting their presence in Jen's life, for her early Cancer birthday was close enough to be touched.
Dear Cancer, I want you to know that an eclipse will not break you up necessarily. An eclipse will always test the strength of a current, very close alliance. A weak relationship will not be able to withstand the heavy-duty tests, pressure, and full disclosure that an eclipse will bring, but a strong one will survive, even if there are initial difficulties. Jen was convinced there were other romantic partners "out there" for her, one who would be better suited to her nature. She was philosophical - the relationship had a positive affect, for it got her dating again after a painful divorce. It was good to see that she was not going to let any grass grow under the feet.
There is no doubt that in August a partner is likely to be the weak link, but only if that relationship is not right for you. Pluto is being very feisty to the other planets, and as a result you may find that someone in your life seems to block your ideas and frustrate you left and right. Keep presenting your case though, because by month's end things will get easier - your persuasiveness may turn things around!
Jen went on to describe an upcoming vacation she will take in October to Tuscany to see friends. She would stay in a charming town where she would be able to chill out for two weeks. I was shaking my head, amazed at how perfectly Jen was using her aspects. Jupiter will be back in Cancer's house of long distance travel starting on September 9 until January 22, so I was quick to tell Jen that her timing was perfect. Not only is career brilliantly lit in most Cancers' charts, but travel and study is, too.
If you are planning to travel this fall, you are in luck, for your trip will go divinely well. All sorts of good news will be due you in the year-end months, and with Jupiter and Uranus due to conjoin on September 18, you, dear reader, may have luck with foreign business relationships, too.
You may be considering doing an import-export deal, or next month you may get a surprise assignment from a foreign company, publisher, or broadcaster. You may be hired as a translator, or see your work be translated into other languages. It will be not only a great time to travel but also to go back to college.
Finally, if you have a court case that is ongoing, the ninth house, so favorably lit, will help you get a good settlement between September 9 and January 22.
Now I will address the "elephant in the room" - namely the upcoming severe cardinal cross that is about to reach perfect calibration on August 6 and 7. No one knows precisely what to expect, for we have never seen one this extreme and won't again in this lifetime. The signs involved are financial signs, so it is very possible that the stock market will gyrate up and down near August 6 or in the following week. Stick to a conservative course.
I should explain a few terms before I discuss the cardinal cross configuration. The word cardinal comes from the Latin word for "first" and your sign, Cancer, and the other cardinal signs of Aries, Libra, and Capricorn all are first signs to start a season. Cardinals are very energetic and have an urgency about them - they say, "We need to act NOW!"
Next come the fixed signs are the standard bearers of the zodiac and stand in the middle of the season. Fixed signs are the quintessential expression of that season. They remind us of our original goals and in so doing, their fixed and stable nature becomes an asset. The mutable signs come third and are the last of the season. Mutable signs are known to be the most flexible, adaptable, and communicative of signs, helping us move on to the next season.
Cardinal signs like change for the sake of change, but as a Cancer you are often caught in two worlds, longing to move forward but often feel emotionally tied to the past. Water sign Cancer is ruled by the moon, and in a chart, the moon rules memories, hopes, and dreams. Your water element gives you a high level of emotional intelligence, but the moon can make you overly sentimental, sometimes, and that can have you hanging on to bad situations way past the time that you should have left.
So on one side, as a cardinal sign you need and like change, but on the other side, as a Cancer, you often taunt yourself by asking yourself, "Have my decisions been right? Should I have gone a different way?" Yours is the only cardinal sign that is prone to second-guess yourself - the other cardinals simply move forward and let the chips fall where they may. This month, make a conscious effort to embrace the side of you that likes change and sees a brighter future - your instincts will be very sharp, so trust them!
Now, you may be asking, "What is a grand cross or a cardinal cross? The answer is that a grand cross happens when planets "square off" and stand at 90-degree angles in relation to each other. These planets refuse to help one another and will present a set of obstacles. To have a "cardinal" cross, the planets involved must be in cardinal signs, including Aries, Libra, Cancer, and Capricorn.
There are three types of cross patterns, ones that are cardinal, fixed, or mutable. We had a fixed cross August 16, 1999, and that one affected mostly those readers with their Sun and other planets in Leo, Aquarius, Taurus, and Scorpio
This one will affect you, dear Cancer, particularly if you have a June birthday. On August 6 and 7 the planets will all be within a few tiny degrees of each other, which is very significant, for that will create a perfect cross.
Technically, to have a cross pattern, you need four planets "squared" at 90-degree angles from each other, and two planets in opposition, at 180 degrees. Imagine a perfectly square box with a big X in the middle, going to each corner of the square - those are the oppositions.
This time, however, on August 6 and 7, we will have not four but ten squares and not two but seven oppositions. Mama mia! This cross will involve powerhouse planets in cardinal signs: Pluto, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, as well as the Sun and the transiting moon in Cancer. You see why astrologers are sitting up and paying attention to this configuration. This high number of aspects increases the number of challenges and obstacles, but also allows for radical, necessary, and ultimately beneficial change.
Squares literally make you "turn a corner" - you have little choice but to face problems "squarely" and find a solution. They won't let you ignore what comes up, but rather you will need to face the problem head on. Oppositions are like they sound - they often create a tug of war between two people or two conflicting values or goals, but always allow for the possibility for harmony through cooperation and balance. If the situation is basically a good one, you will find that balance, but if it's not, there will be a tearing away - a sudden break - of that situation or relationship with the feeling that enough is enough. Breakups are not always bad. Sometimes they can be quite liberating.
Coincidentally - are you ready for this? - Mars will up the ante of this cardinal cross when he travels to the precise degree of the June 26 eclipse. Like a child poking a stick at a pinata, when Mars reaches August 6 at five degrees, he will unleash the messages of the June 26 eclipse. There is no way to say whether you will view what falls out as a prize or as difficult news. As I tweeted on Twitter near the eclipse of June 26, these types of aspects will bring news in extreme ends of the spectrum, either as very good news or just the opposite, with not much room for anything in between. Remember though, you would need planets in early cardinal degrees or be born in June to be in the middle of this cosmic development in August.
Even if news proves to be not what you want to hear, the cross patterns of planets will create tensions strong enough to bring about a resolve and release. Afterward you may say that you felt it was a blessing that all came up when it did because making the decision allowed you to move on.
I feel the news of this cardinal cross will relate to a close one-on-one relationship or partner, in love or business. That person is likely to be making news in your life. At the same time, you are forging a whole new appreciation for yourself. You are getting to know the evolved person you have become and all that you are now capable of contributing to others.
Often we view ourselves through old, outdated glasses, but all that is about to change. I feel that you will finally get to see that you have come a long way, and that you should be congratulated for personal growth and considerable accomplishments on many levels.
The new moon, August 9, will help you address the state of your finances. A potential problem, however, is that this new moon will loosely oppose Neptune, suggesting that you may not be privy to a certain condition or financial transaction that you need to know about, thereby not allowing you full disclosure. If you need to make any sort of financial deal or decision, you will have to dig quite a bit to find out what is being hidden from view. It may not be because someone is trying to hide information - it may simply be the way things are right now.
Fortunately, Neptune is not in tight degree, so you can likely surmount any difficulties. This new moon may help you see a raise. It would be worth asking for one, but be sure to have a good reason to present, and don't push too hard, not with the planets acting up so much this month.
All month keep in mind that you need to be decisive early on because Mercury will begin to retrograde on August 20 to September 12. You will begin to feel the slowdown that Mercury will bring as early as August 6. Mercury, the planet of communication, contracts, commerce, shipping, the mail, and transportation, will retrograde in Libra in your solar fourth house of home. This is the area where you will see delays or a change of plans.
It is not wise to sign contracts, begin new renovation plans, or buy expensive items when Mercury is out of phase, and it is especially not wise to buy any electronic items. If you have an emergency, though, like a leak in the roof, for example, under those circumstances you have to get it fixed, instantly. If you are in the middle of renovations, your contractor may find something he did not expect to find, and that may cause the work to slow down. Ask that you be given a written notice of any possible overages that might come up.
If you need a new computer because you are going back to college or graduate school later this month, you haven't a moment to spare. I would rather you buy it in September, near September 17 or 18 when Jupiter (good fortune) will conjoin Uranus (ruling all things digital). If you can't wait, buy your laptop immediately, in early August. Try to wait if you can, though, for I like mid-September better. Also, sign up for classes early because if you wait, you may get closed out of a class you had hoped to take in September.
If you are not moving or renovating your space, you might want to give a party at home on Friday evening, August 20, when Venus and Mars will link in a very romantic embrace. This is a rare and highly romantic conjunction, so make the very most of it!
You may be looking forward to a distant trip within four days of the full moon on August 24. This full moon is beautifully oriented toward Pluto, so you would really enjoy this trip, doubly so if you have a significant other to bring along. Consider going to a place near water, as this full moon will be in Pisces. If you can't take a vacation, a business trip may work out really well and you're likely to come home with the promise of an order. Cancers born within five days of June 22 will benefit the most from this lyrical full moon August 24.
Romance will be best for you (if you have a good relationship) on August 14-15, 19-20, 24, 25, and 29-30.
Summary
Lucky Jupiter and surprise-a-minute Uranus are in your tenth house of fame and honors, so you may be getting the career offers you used to only dream about. Both are in Aries, so entrepreneurial opportunities shine. This is the number one area of your chart, sure to give you happiness and gratification, so keep your focus on your career.
This month, you'll be on a mission to make more money and will do whatever it takes to find a lucrative new source. To that end, the new moon August 9 will help, but because Neptune stands opposite it this time, you need to be careful not to let enthusiasm cause you to overestimate your earning potential from any venture, especially if you will work on commission, royalties, or licensing fee basis. By all means ask for a raise, or dive in to negotiate better benefits after the new moon arrives, but all the while keep your expectations realistic. Fortunately, Neptune is in what astrologers call "wide" mathematical vicinity, meaning this is not a tight aspect, so you can proceed, but just be careful.
While your career buoys you up this month, your home situation seems to have deflated or overwhelmed you lately. Growing responsibilities may be weighing you down or it may simply be that you are a bit tired of a situation that seems to be changing very little over a long time. Family obligations may be a consideration, or you may be temporarily struggling with home-related costs or the payment of a high mortgage. Career opportunities will be wonderful so you will have to keep your focus there. There's no doubt that this month you'll need to split your attention evenly between home and career. It won't be easy, especially near August 6-8 and 13.
Everything will be complicated even more by the dictates of a partner or go-between who seems not to agree with the direction you want to take. This person is making everything a battle and you may wonder why life has to be so hard. Don't give up, even though the first three weeks of August will seem like a near-endless period of conflict with this person.
After the Sun moves into Virgo on August 20, you'll find navigating life - and negotiating with this person, too - to be easier. You will be able to articulate your views and bring your opponent to a more sensible position. In this case, your persistence will pay off.
By late month, you may decide you need a vacation, and certainly by then you will have earned the right to go. It's a good idea! The full moon, August 24, which will be operative within four days of this date, will help you pack your bags. Cancer is soothed by locations near water, so consider a seaside spot.
If you want to go farther afield than usual, all sorts of opportunities will pop up on foreign shores, and may also include a chance for you to study, publish, or trade goods or services abroad. In this sense, you may be able to combine business with pleasure quite effectively.
If you are going back to college or grad school, you'll be at your new location by August 24, setting up your new living arrangements for the coming semester. Sign up for your most coveted classes the minute you can, as early as possible to avoid being closed out, for with Mercury about to retrograde, you may have to arrange a quick change in plans.
Broadcasting offers will glitter too, possibly as a guest on TV or radio, with excellent possibilities for publicity. With Neptune so prominent, the image of your face is likely to be "out there," so investigate what's on tap, for your world is rapidly expanding, dear Cancer!
Mercury will be retrograde from August 24 to September 12, so be sure you make your biggest initiations early in the month, or else table things for mid-September. Actually, the option to pick up the thread in September would get my vote - that's a better month to do almost anything.
Romance will be best August 14-15, 19-20, 24, 25, and 29-30.
Dates to Note:
You are in a solid career period, but don't fall for get rich quick schemes - with Neptune playing havoc all over your chart, even the savviest Cancer may be taken in.
The new moon in Leo on August 9 would ordinarily be a blessing to your finances, but again, Neptune is obscuring key facts, and Mercury is about to go retrograde August 20 to September 12. Be skeptical of anything you are told. Play devil's advocate by asking the hard questions.
Ask for a raise in the week August 9 to 13, but again, be realistic. If you overestimate your worth, it may backfire and you may get nothing. Be happy with small gains. In a month where information will be hard to get, realize that there may be many reasons your salary demands are not being met, and none may relate to how much you are appreciated.
Concern over the care of an elderly relative or a home or property matter will play out in the background all month. You can make progress, however. Your hardest weekend: August 7-8 and the time near August 13 when you'll need to do some quick thinking to keep career and home running smoothly. It'll take all you have to give.
Beautify your home or look for bargains in a white sale on August 20 when Venus and Mars cook up ways for you to pretty up your home.
Romance will be best August 14-15, 19-20, 24, 25, and 29-30.
Within four day of the full moon August 24 you may travel far and wide. Or you may be on a college campus to set up your living arrangements for the coming semester. It's the right time to do so. The minute you can sign up for classes, be the first in line - you may get closed out if you dally.
Consider going on a foreign trip in the last part of August, to coincide with the full moon, August 24 plus or minus four days.

Fashion's Night Out September 10, 2010 New York City
Please mark the date! Come to the fabulous festivities for Fashion's Night Out on September 10, from 6 to 10 PM at Henri Bendel at 55th Street & Fifth Avenue, in New York City.
Come see me, Susan Miller, and get a personal one-on-one horoscope reading with me! You will get a ten-minute reading just for you, so try to have one "burning question" ready that you'd love to have me help you solve. Although this will be a wonderful "girls' night out" kind of event, I welcome my men readers, too. Please promise you will stop by as well! My guy reader questions always are good ones - you make me think, and in anyone's book, that is to be encouraged.
Readings will be available for $25 for the ten-minute reading. I will donate all the proceeds of the night to the Bendel Fashion's Night Out charity of choice, the New York City AIDS Fund.
This charity is dear to my heart. As you may already know, in my past, I have been through two harrowing surgeries to correct a birth defect that involved excessive bleeding on my left leg. In the first surgery, at age 14, I was in the hospital for eleven months, and the second time, in 1992, I was in for eight months. During all my surgeries, so far in life I have I received a total of 38 blood transfusions.
I am fortunate - all the blood I received was wholesome and untainted, and because of that, I am alive today. In the early days of the disease, when the medical community was still learning how to properly test donated blood for AIDS, some hospital transfusion recipients got AIDS. Among the most notable was Elizabeth Glaser, who contracted the disease from receiving a blood transfusion after giving birth. Before she died at a young age, she became an effective AIDS activist and raised quite a bit of awareness for the disease. Most of us know people who are no longer among us who have fallen victim to this disease. More work needs to be done. Being a very lucky girl, I will always try to find ways to say thank you to the world, and to God, for protecting me. As you see, AIDS is a charity close to my heart. Please come and help me raise quite a bit of money for this charity!
So mark the date - the evening of September 10 in New York City. Henri Bendel has planned quite an array of sparkling events for that evening - all very unique and fun - and I am only one small part of their activities. If you are not familiar with Henri Bendel you are in for a treat! The store itself is housed in a beautiful jewel of a landmark building that's small and very elegant. It is my very favorite store to buy on-trend fashion handbags, scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, and makeup. Bendel's specializes in accessories and beauty only, so come with your list to get ready for fall!
Right now the events for Fashion's Night Out are still secret, but as we get closer to September 10, Henri Bendel will reveal all on their website: www.HenriBendel.com
Please come! I want to meet you!

Congratulations to author Derek Blasberg for his cool new book "Classy."
I have been so busy lately that it's been hard to sit down to read a book. Still, when I heard that Derek Blasberg had recently written "Classy" and it was hitting high notes at the New York Times, I knew instantly I wanted to read it. Derek grew up in St. Louis, but graduated from New York University with a major in Dramatic Literature and Journalism.
Anyone familiar with the downtown, uber-hip scene in New York City will soon hear about Derek. He is one of the cool, young arbiters of taste here in the same way that creative director Joe Zee at Elle magazine has become. (If you watch The City on TV, you know Joe.) Derek edits a regular column at Style.com, so you get the picture.
This is an ultra-modern book of etiquette aimed at a modern young woman born into an age where things are changing at the speed of light. With so much new technology to enjoy and discover, and social networking changing the way we think and communicate, questions of what's right, what's wrong are inevitable - and yet surprisingly tough to sort out. When is a skirt too short? When, or if, is it OK to answer a cell phone at a meeting? What about breaking up a romance - what are the new rules? On Facebook, how can you avoid being a victim of TMI (too much information) versus just being friendly? Derek Blasberg tackles it all.
His chapters are written in such a compelling way, curiosity leads you to wander in, and once there, you'll find you stay there. I first opened the book to this chapter, "Some Notes on New Places: Whether you're crossing the street or crossing the ocean, it's good to keep a few things in mind when you've changed your location." How can you not read on?
Yet Derek never tricks you - his chapter heads deliver the goods he promises, which is more than I can say for some tabloid magazine blurbs these days. Derek's advice is substantial, very honest, and always thought-provoking. Even when his advice is delivered in humorous form, which is frequently, he manages to make solid sense, and may even coax you to see things from a completely new perspective.
I particularly loved his chapter that lists "Fashionable Films to Know." There's another chapter, right after it, called "Fictional Characters to Know (in Books You Should Read)." I am a sucker for these kinds of lists, because I love to see what other people enjoy - I might get an idea. In this case, I got lots of new ideas of classic books to read and classic films to see that somehow (no idea how) I missed.
"Classy" is billed as the perfect handbook for the very young woman of Gossip Girl age, but honestly, I feel this book is for anyone, including me. Here is the link to Amazon to get it. I think you'll love it, and after reading it, you may want to pass it on to someone you think might enjoy it just as much as you did. Click here:

If you are not sure if you signed up or not, try entering your email address. If we already have it, you will get an instant message that says so. If you are new to the list, you will be asked to confirm your desire to be on the list with an instant email in your email box.
Your name and email address will never be sold, lent, or given away. I value your privacy. I see my newsletter, as well as Twitter, as a good way for you and I to stay in touch.
Please add "astrologyzone" to your address book to ensure you will get your newsletter. If you feel you did sign up but never received my newsletter, it may have mistakenly landed in your spam box. Please let your provider know you would like to receive my newsletters.
It's fun for me to have a venue like a newsletter to discuss topics at length that would not quite go on Astrology Zone.
My next newsletter will be sent soon and will be all about the Cardinal Cross of August 6 and 7. Hurry and sign up!

Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint users, Astrology Zone Premier is ready for you, too. See below for precise instructions.
Don't go without the advantage you get with accurate astrological daily forecasts by Susan Miller!
Simply Text "AZP" to 46966
Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile customers: When you text AZP to 46966, you will receive a text message back with step-by-step instructions on how to download the application.
Example: Verizon customers are told to go to "Get it Now," then "Tools on the Go," then "Mind, Body & Soul," and then select Astrology Zone Premier. So, Verizon customers will have to actually exit the Text Message and go back into the menu on their phone. This is something that you, as a Verizon customer, have to do to get any application, so it's not a new process, and it's worth the effort!
AT&T and Sprint customers: When you text AZP to 46966, you will receive a text message back that includes a link to the application. It is a more direct process than the one outlined above.
Not all phones are equipped to take the new technology, so check first with your provider and explain which phone you own. If you purchased a cell phone in the past year, chances are your phone is ready.
Every carrier sets their own rates, so check with your provider to find out what Astrology Zone Premier would cost for you. I can say it's very affordable, and that I give you much more information than competitive services. In this economy, more than ever, you need to be armed with all the information you need, when you need it - in your pocket or purse.
You Will Receive:
Astrology Zone Premier is a new, downloadable application with plenty of bells and whistles, a robust daily mobile service that I know you'll love! Here is what you will get:
Your daily forecast for today, 75-80 words, as well as the one for yesterday and tomorrow, too.
Check all 12 signs to see what's happening for your friends and family (or for your rising sign, also important for you).
View a list of special dates coming up that month so that you will never be caught unaware of your best days.
See special articles I have written that won't appear anywhere else but on your cell phone! One that I love: "Quick Match Lounge Guide," the perfect info to use when you are at a party or lounge. Have you met two interesting people and wonder which to spend a little more time with at the party? Check and see which one I think is best for you!
You may be familiar with my longer Matchmaker article - also available on the phone - but this is short and cute and gives you the info fast!
There are lots of other things too numerous to list, and I keep adding more! Try it!
