Sagittarius Horoscope for August 2010

As you left July and began August, you may have noted some strange turbulence in the air. On July 30, Uranus was having a fight with Mars, so you may have noticed a sudden problem emerge in your social life in regard to a friend or sweetheart. You probably thought this was an isolated incident, and it might be, but, then again, considering the wild planetary placements in early August, it may have been just the tip of the iceberg.

We are all due for turbulence as planets create sudden tensions, and they will occur in different areas of life. Those who will feel it most will be the cardinal signs. You are a mutable sign, known to be flexible and adoptable, so you should not likely be overly affected by events - but just in case, you need to keep your antenna up, for even if you are not feeling the fallout, the people whose cooperation you need may be under duress, and it will be helpful to know this.

A very unusual configuration is about to take place in the heavens. Pluto, Uranus, Jupiter (your ruler), Saturn, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and the Sun will square off in a pattern that is called a grand cross. Because ALL the planets will be in cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, this creates what is called a cardinal cross and will create tensions in order to bring about necessary changes on a societal level as well as a personal level.

For a genuine grand cross to take place, you need four squares and two oppositions. This cardinal cross will have ten squares and seven oppositions. That is a lot - we have never seen anything like this! Also, for a true cross to take place, you need all the planets to be within eight degrees of each other, which is really hard to get, but this one will go one better - every one of these planets will all be within one and five degrees, creating an even tighter cross pattern than is necessary. This is why astrologers have been watching this configuration for months as it has drawn closer. Migrating planets are now ready to click into place on August 6 and 7.

As creatures of habit, the universe knows we often avoid, ignore, or completely fail to notice certain matters that need to be discussed and addressed. A difficult cross pattern will test the strength of certain relationships, endeavors, and conditions. If the universe finds any weak links, they will break down, but strong areas will become stronger under the pressure. All this is done to ferret out situations that need action now.

Most astrologers feel that with planets in Cancer and Capricorn as part of the cross - two signs known to be associated with big, global corporations and huge budgets - we will see a rocking of the stock market, more extreme than what happened already in recent weeks. That would occur on August 6 or 7, or, if it goes a little later, up to August 13.

Pluto will be one of the reigning powers of this configuration by being positioned in the middle of all the activity. In your chart, he will hold court in your second house of earned income and financial resources. Something seems to be at a big turning point, or perhaps a breaking point. You may settle a large bill, or be in negotiations with an investor, creditor, government official, or someone with whom you've won a settlement.

Take nothing for granted. If a venture capitalist has promised to wire you money, stay in close contact to be sure the funds are sent on time. Ask to have the money sent sooner rather than later - as early in the month as possible, prior to the formation of the cardinal cross August 6 - 7 if possible.

All month, keep a lid on optional spending, keep track of valuables, and take no big financial risks. If you work for others, the first half of August would be not be the best time to ask for a raise - see if you can table that discussion for next month, during the second half of September. If you have your own business, now is not the time to raise your prices across the board.

When it comes to your career, things are improving day by day. Saturn had put you through your paces ever since he entered that area of your chart in September 2007, but now that Saturn has just left, you've now proven your worth to any VIP who was skeptical that you could handle the position you were being groomed to take on. Now that you have walked the gauntlet and not only survived, you will collect considerable rewards. Saturn never bestows benefits during his test period, but always after it is it over - you've had to wait three years, but your time has come, dear Sagittarius.

You won't see anything much happen in August because for news, you will need the right new moon to open the career gates. You will have it September 8 and in the two weeks that will follow that moon.

Here is something else to consider. Your ruler of your tenth house of professional honors and career status is Mercury, and Mercury will be retrograde from August 20 to September 12. This will cause immediate delays that can't be helped, so you will have to be patient as the rest of the world catches up with you.

You can always expect to see slow downs as you get closer to a Mercury retrograde period, but this time, the lead-time will be quite long, from August 1 onward. This makes August a bit of a messy month. Get ready to roll in September by writing your resume, organizing your list of contacts to call, and if you are creative, by perfecting your portfolio or reel. You will want to be ready to bolt out of the gate once all the conditions are perfect from, say, September 14 or so.

While you wait for better conditions, you can do what you love best in August - travel! The new moon August 9 will light your house of travel and study, and either would give you a terrific shot of inspiration. See if you can take time away, for with Mercury retrograde pending, you won't miss any vital opportunities. It's time for you to relax, so take your chance while you can.

If you were born on December 10 or within five days of this date, you will benefit from this new moon in a big way.

Your home and family will be a joyous focus once you get to the full moon, August 24, operative plus or minus four days. This full moon will signal Pluto in a very cheerful way, so there may be some good news about money coming up at this time, possibly related to real estate, or because a family member sees to it that you get financial help. This should be an excellent moment in the month!

Socially things may be tricky. You have a group of planets in your house of friendship opposed to a two major planets in your house of love, so either a friend or a sweetheart may act a bit out of character this month. Or, your friend may not like your choice of romantic partner and say so, or your new romantic interest may not get along with your friends.

If you were to experience any of these difficulties, it would happen in early August, but as the month goes on, things will improve. Of the two areas in your chart, your most protected area will have to do with your love interest and your relationship with your children. Be careful about what you write online, especially in social media this month - your words could have all kinds of ramifications you may not have considered.

A social event could send your spirits soaring on August 20 when Venus and Mars will make a rare and glorious conjunction in air sign Libra, a sign that blends beautifully with your fire sign element! This should be a lovely moment for you, doubly so if your birthday falls on or within four days of November 22.

Your best romantic dates will include August 9, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, and 26-28.

Summary

This month will have all the elements you adore doing - travel, romance, and time to shop and to connect with old friends. And while you may have a tricky situation to sort out, everyone of every sign will be in the same boat as cosmic winds will be blowing strong gale-force winds. Those winds will be bringing in the new and breaking down the old, outworn areas. If at times the conditions in the world and in your own life seem extreme, it's because the world will be in transition, moving from one state of understanding and enlightenment to another, and transitions always require effort. Later, you'll be glad for all the news you get, for the universe will be on a mission to find out what is working and what is not, and give you a chance to fix what is broken.

With Mercury about to retrograde from August 20 to September 12 in your career sector, you won't miss much if you decide to duck out of town for a week or two. You will feel the slowdown to everyday events as early as August 1, as people you will be dealing with become increasingly indecisive or out of reach. Take the time now to decompress before autumn arrives, for by mid-September you'll again be moving at the speed of light.

A lot seems to be going on with friends, but in this topsy-turvy month, no one seems quite normal. A friend or sweetheart will be quick to take offense, and you may start to feel like you're walking around on eggshells. Or, the situation may reverse, and you may hardly believe what you are hearing from someone close whom you've always trusted. A friend may not like a sweetheart or your sweetheart may lock horns with one of your friends. My instinct about this is to advise you to give the other person some slack - things may right themselves again. If you don't want to lose the relationship, especially regarding an event that happens near August 6 or 7, then give it time. See how you feel.

Until people start acting like their usual selves again, you may be able to fit in one more important trip before summer fades, thanks to the new moon August 9 and in the two weeks that follow. You can go to a foreign country now if you like - and this time, travel for pure pleasure. You, of all signs, must have built up a few enviable frequent flier miles.

Neptune, planet of confusion and forgetfulness (but also of creativity and inspiration), will oppose the Sun, so keep track of your necessary treasures when traveling - your cell phone, iPod, digital camera, recharging cords, and batteries, as well as your eyeglasses. Don't lose your ID when going through security, either. If possible, put a business card on electronics and one in your case for glasses.

On the plus side, Neptune will give you time to reflect and if you go to a new setting away from your usual cares, you will rejuvenate your creative spirit. Neptune is the mythological god of the sea, so consider going to a pretty town along a seaside coast, for example, in Greece, Italy, Scotland, France, or Spain (just to get you thinking!)

Your home will need attention within days of the full moon August 24, and the matter at hand could be as simple as signing a new lease or browsing stores for a great new piece of furniture. Or, your to-do list may have a monumental deal on the agenda, such as to decide whether or not to buy or sell a house. Keep in mind that it's not wise to make any big moves while Mercury is retrograde, which as said earlier, it will be by time of the full moon. See if you can do research now. For best results, put off the actual signing for September 14 when the moon will be in Sagittarius and Mercury will be out of retrograde.

The best day to discuss career financial plans and stage negotiations will be Thursday, August 26, when an authority figures will be on your side.

Dates to Note:

Travel would be a wonderful option this month from the new moon August 9 onward. You can go overseas!

With Neptune playing a strong role, and Mercury being a little gremlin, keep track of valuables when on your trip - you could become forgetful.

Be home by the full moon of August 24, when a home-related matter (large or small) will need to be solved within four days of this date.

Remember: Mercury will be retrograde August 20 to September 12. Sign no contracts this month if possible, and delay doing so until mid-September. Mercury in this phase is a sign things are in flux, and any decision you make won't likely work out as planned.

A good day to have a career interview would be August 26, when Pluto will trine the Sun. VIPs will view you favorably, and the money being offered will be excellent, too.

Jupiter will still be in your romance sector, spicing things up! Your outlook for finding love is strong all month. The first five months of 2011 will be even stronger for finding true love.

No one's favorite days: The weekend of August 7-8, and Friday, August 13. Socially those dates are not good, and could bring unexpected problems. In truth, you'd do best to fly out of town and let friends be for a while. By the time you get back, hopefully your interactions will go better.

Best romantic dates: August 9, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, and 26-28.

This charity is dear to my heart. As you may already know, in my past, I have been through two harrowing surgeries to correct a birth defect that involved excessive bleeding on my left leg. In the first surgery, at age 14, I was in the hospital for eleven months, and the second time, in 1992, I was in for eight months. During all my surgeries, so far in life I have I received a total of 38 blood transfusions.

I am fortunate - all the blood I received was wholesome and untainted, and because of that, I am alive today. In the early days of the disease, when the medical community was still learning how to properly test donated blood for AIDS, some hospital transfusion recipients got AIDS. Among the most notable was Elizabeth Glaser, who contracted the disease from receiving a blood transfusion after giving birth. Before she died at a young age, she became an effective AIDS activist and raised quite a bit of awareness for the disease. Most of us know people who are no longer among us who have fallen victim to this disease. More work needs to be done. Being a very lucky girl, I will always try to find ways to say thank you to the world, and to God, for protecting me. As you see, AIDS is a charity close to my heart. Please come and help me raise quite a bit of money for this charity!

So mark the date - the evening of September 10 in New York City. Henri Bendel has planned quite an array of sparkling events for that evening - all very unique and fun - and I am only one small part of their activities. If you are not familiar with Henri Bendel you are in for a treat! The store itself is housed in a beautiful jewel of a landmark building that's small and very elegant. It is my very favorite store to buy on-trend fashion handbags, scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, and makeup. Bendel's specializes in accessories and beauty only, so come with your list to get ready for fall!

Congratulations to author Derek Blasberg for his cool new book "Classy."

I have been so busy lately that it's been hard to sit down to read a book. Still, when I heard that Derek Blasberg had recently written "Classy" and it was hitting high notes at the New York Times, I knew instantly I wanted to read it. Derek grew up in St. Louis, but graduated from New York University with a major in Dramatic Literature and Journalism.

Anyone familiar with the downtown, uber-hip scene in New York City will soon hear about Derek. He is one of the cool, young arbiters of taste here in the same way that creative director Joe Zee at Elle magazine has become. (If you watch The City on TV, you know Joe.) Derek edits a regular column at Style.com, so you get the picture.

This is an ultra-modern book of etiquette aimed at a modern young woman born into an age where things are changing at the speed of light. With so much new technology to enjoy and discover, and social networking changing the way we think and communicate, questions of what's right, what's wrong are inevitable - and yet surprisingly tough to sort out. When is a skirt too short? When, or if, is it OK to answer a cell phone at a meeting? What about breaking up a romance - what are the new rules? On Facebook, how can you avoid being a victim of TMI (too much information) versus just being friendly? Derek Blasberg tackles it all.

His chapters are written in such a compelling way, curiosity leads you to wander in, and once there, you'll find you stay there. I first opened the book to this chapter, "Some Notes on New Places: Whether you're crossing the street or crossing the ocean, it's good to keep a few things in mind when you've changed your location." How can you not read on?

Yet Derek never tricks you - his chapter heads deliver the goods he promises, which is more than I can say for some tabloid magazine blurbs these days. Derek's advice is substantial, very honest, and always thought-provoking. Even when his advice is delivered in humorous form, which is frequently, he manages to make solid sense, and may even coax you to see things from a completely new perspective.

I particularly loved his chapter that lists "Fashionable Films to Know." There's another chapter, right after it, called "Fictional Characters to Know (in Books You Should Read)." I am a sucker for these kinds of lists, because I love to see what other people enjoy - I might get an idea. In this case, I got lots of new ideas of classic books to read and classic films to see that somehow (no idea how) I missed.

"Classy" is billed as the perfect handbook for the very young woman of Gossip Girl age, but honestly, I feel this book is for anyone, including me. Here is the link to Amazon to get it.
